Preparing Students for the New Earth and Space Science Regents Exam **PART 2** ONLY FOR THOSE WHO TOOK PART 1 **IN PERSON** Presented by Brian Vorwald – 8:30-2:30pm
November 17, 2023 @ 8:30 am - 2:30 pm
Participants will take a deeper dive into the High School Earth and Space Science standards, building on what was done during Day 1. **Tentative activities are listed below and may be adjusted based on feedback from participants and what is covered during Day 1.** -Exploring the relationship between the Science and Engineering Practice Developing and Using Models and the Crosscutting Concept Systems and System Models. -Working through a series of phenomena-based HS ESS Space Systems activities based on the following PEs: HS-ESS1-4 and HS-ESS1-7: -Comparing content in HS ESS PE’s and their clarification statements to MS ESS PE’s: -Analyzing lessons for three-dimensional alignment using a lesson screener: -Comparing Weather and Climate PEs MS-ESS2-5 and HS-ESS2-8 (added by NYSED)
• The goal will be to establish the content that will be addressed in the middle school level compared to what will be covered in the high school regents ESS course.
• This activity will be facilitated by reviewing the NYSED Elementary Level and Intermediate Level ESS required investigations. Participants should have with them documents associated with the two investigations.
• The potential for bundling PEs in the HS Weather and Climate into a unit (possibly with PEs from another topic) will be explored. Participants will begin brainstorming a lesson aligned with a phenomenon and 3D learning. The lesson can be new or a modification of an existing lesson to align with the three-dimensional (3D) phenomenon-based pedagogy of the standards.
