CARES Act and Higher Education Emergency Relief Funds (HEERF)

HEERF I – CARES Act

Western Suffolk BOCES acknowledges an authorized representative of the institution has signed and returned to the US Department of Education the Certification and Agreement and the institution intends to use the funds received under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.

Western Suffolk BOCES will receive $422,592 from the Department of Education pursuant to the Certification and Agreement (for) Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students.

Western Suffolk BOCES has distributed $0 under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act as of July 1, 2020.

Western Suffolk BOCES has distributed $0 under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act as of September 30, 2020.

Western Suffolk BOCES has distributed $417,098 to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act as of November 30, 2020. Western Suffolk BOCES applied $5,494 to cover unbudgeted institutional expenses related to the COVID-19 pandemic. All funds received by Western Suffolk BOCES under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students have been distributed.

HEERF II – CRRSA

Western Suffolk BOCES received an additional allocation of federal funds under the Higher Education Emergency Relief Funds (HEERF II).  These federal funds were authorized by the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSAA) and signed into law on December 27, 2020.  The U.S. Department of Education has expanded upon guidance previously provided under CARES for awarding of HEERF II funds to include the ability to award students who are exclusively in the distance education courses and for the use of direct cost of attendance expenditures.  However, CRRSAA also stipulates that funding should be prioritized with those who have exceptional need such as students who receive Pell grants.  To be eligible for the exceptional need you must have had an EFC of 0-5711.  123 students were awarded block grants of $750.00 each.

Western Suffolk BOCES was awarded $644,984.00 under Section 314(a)(1) of the HEERF II funding.

On Jan. 19, 2021 WSB received $433,688 institutional funds.

On Feb. 22, 2021 WSB received $211,296 in student funds.

On April 13, 2021 WSB allocated $216,834 to loss of revenue.

On May 12, 2021 WSB allocated $92,250 of the student portion for students with exceptional need.

On June 7, 2021 WSB allocated $216,834 to revenue loss exhausting the institutional portion of the funds.

As of Sept. 30, 2021, WSB has disbursed $0 additional funds under CRRSAA Section 314(a)(1).

On Nov. 4, 2021, WSB allocated $119,043.54 of the student portion to students exhausting the student portion of this fund.

 

HEERF III – ARP

Western Suffolk BOCES received an additional allocation of federal funds under the Higher Education Emergency Relief Funds (HEERF III).  These federal funds were authorized by the American Rescue Plan (ARP) and signed into law on March 11, 2021.  The U.S. Department of Education has expanded upon guidance previously provided under CARES/CRRSA for awarding of HEERF III funds to include all students no eligibilities requirements in the law.  However, ARP also stipulates that funding should be prioritized with those who have exceptional need such as students who receive Pell grants.  To be eligible for the exceptional need you must have had an EFC of 0-5846 or have extraordinary financial circumstances.

Western Suffolk BOCES was awarded $1,133,168 under Section 314(a)(1) of the HEERF III funding.

Aug. 4, 2021: WSB allocated $100,ooo of institutional portion of funds to loss of revenue.

Aug 4, 2021: WSB allocated $112,000 of the student portion of funds to students with exceptional need.

Dec. 31, 2021: WSB has disbursed $0 additional funds under the ARP portion.

April 10,2022: Western Suffolk BOCES has disbursed $0 additional funds under the ARP portion.

June 6, 2022: Western Suffolk BOCES allocated $466,854 of institutional portion of funds to loss of revenue.

June 9, 2022: Western Suffolk BOCES allocated $454,854 of the student portion of funds to students.

As of June 9, 2022, all Western Suffolk  BOCES HEERF Grant Award Funds have been exhausted.
