Explore the Vision for NYSSLS-based Science Instruction Gr 3-5 **IN PERSON** presented by Glen Cochrane – 8:30-2:30pm

October 11, 2023 @ 8:30 am - 2:30 pm

Participants in this workshop will explore the three-dimensional expectations for teaching and learning with the New York State Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS). A goal of this workshop will be for participants to develop the understanding that students should be learning science by doing science and figuring out phenomena observable in the natural world. We will review the topics for grades 3, 4 and 5 and some strategies for instruction. A brief review of the required investigations and where they might best fit into curriculum and instruction. Another goal is to look at a system of assessment that includes formative, classroom performance, and summative assessments. We will review released practice NGSS exams from other states and the samples from NYSED. The format for summative performance-based tasks is item clusters which are based performance expectations (PEs) and follow a phenomena-based storyline giving students the opportunity to demonstrate knowledge in context. The difference between assessments aligned with the three-dimensional pedagogy of the NYSSLS and traditional assessments will be considered. We will review drafts of classroom performance tasks and begin working with colleagues to construct cluster assessments that align with NYSSLS expectations to incorporate the three dimensions based on a performance expectation. **B.Y.O.D. (Bring Your Own Device)** Participants should bring a fully charged laptop, iPad, or tablet to download resources and access websites throughout the workshop.
