Mentor texts are well-written pieces in various genres that serve as models and are sources of inspiration for writers at all levels. When we teach writing through mentor texts we make simultaneous use of instructional time: we are teaching writing, expanding their knowledge of the world, and giving them a purpose for the strategies of close reading.
