The NYS Board of Regents voted in January 2015 to adopt new K-12 science learning standards to replace the existing, 20-year-old standards. OEEP staff has been working with the NYS Education Department as part of the Science Education Consortium and now the Science Education Steering Committee to help create and implement these new standards.
NYS will adapt the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) as the basis for future science education for all NYS students. The standards, based upon research that children learn science best by “doing science,” will help students develop a deep understanding of science content and process. Science and engineering practices will be embedded in every activity.
